Top 200 90s Alternative Rock Songs

PDF Print E-mail

By popular demand this list will now involve grunge, mainstream punk rock, and some metal in addition to the college rock, Britpop, post-grunge, and acoustic rock that I had on the list before. Basically it will be a more accurate representation of what you would have heard on alternative rock radio stations in the 90s. I still won’t be including indie rock songs however.. Since I am adding a ton of new songs I have decided to extend the list to 200. Enjoy.

Harley  - Love the 90's   |64.201.85.xxx |2008-07-14 12:19:26
This is a great list. There's too many good songs of the 90's to put them in a specific order but you have to give credit to the person that came up with the list. Kudos to you!

Ps. What about staind? Didn't they have a couple songs in the 90's?
mjb  - alternative-indie-hair bla bla   |69.221.142.xxx |2008-07-21 17:29:48
If you ask me, if you have a guitar or two, a bass, some drums and maybe a keyboard you got yourself a Rock And Roll band. I don't get all these sub labels- alternative, indie etc. It's all rock and roll to me, regardless of what the people in the band look like or who listens to the music, in the end we all just want it to ROCK!
ksmith1504  - nice list   |65.188.232.xxx |2008-07-23 21:49:11
my fav band TEB is up there so it is automatically a good list....red hot chili peppers, the verve, etc make it even better
90s rocks   |60.50.179.xxx |2008-07-25 06:38:19
to tell you the truth...i think top 200 is not enuff for the 90s rock and alternative songs.probably top 300++...90s is way better than todays emo shit..
Anonymous   |125.239.152.xxx |2008-07-25 14:39:54
i second what the above comments said about 90s rock
Me  - Someone please explain   |69.221.116.xxx |2008-07-26 11:39:24
Could someone please tell me the difference between grunge, alternative, indie etc. If u ask me its all just rock n roll, and when u tell me the difference, it cannot include what the artist wears or what they look like, its music this does not matter, i cant hear a flannel shirt. also do not mention what group of people listen to the artist or how many people listen to the artist or what record label the artist signs up with or what venues the artist plays, i cannot HEAR any of that-Its music. Also cannot include if the lyrics say dark or depressing things, that changes a songs MOOD not the genre. So if anyone can explain without saying any of the above, i'd love to hear it
Nikki   |64.13.109.xxx |2008-10-22 13:33:34

I agree with the above comment also. The list would be great at like 500 or more. Music today blows it was better in the 90s
robbie   |76.123.201.xxx |2009-04-29 20:27:48

Anonymous  - pearl jam   |69.79.185.xxx |2008-07-27 23:43:41
I cant believe that you only put 2 songs of Pearl Jam and that the Blink 182 songs and Third eye blind songs were better ranked than the ones of Pearl Jam. You need to fix this list.
Anonymous   |69.79.185.xxx |2008-07-28 00:22:40
You also need to put in that list:

Lightning Crashes - LIVE
No rain - BLIND MELON
Jane Says - JANES ADDICTION
Glycerine - BUSH

Alive, Even Flow, Do the evolution, Yellow Ledbetter, Better man - PEARL JAM.

among others...
Anonymous  - Alive!   |24.90.143.xxx |2008-07-30 09:39:56
Go listen to 'Alive' by Pearl Jam, because as someone who really likes the list overall it's almost funny that it not only isn't on the list, but that it isn't in the top 10.
Sohpie  - Dude   |69.112.163.xxx |2008-07-30 15:44:01
What do you got against Pearl Jam?
No seriously I thought they'd at least make the top 5
if not then top 10
They released some of the greatest songs of the 90s!
Better Man  - Pearl Jam   |125.236.44.xxx |2008-07-31 15:39:13

every morning...

the machine of rage  - you kill the name   |125.236.44.xxx |2008-08-05 21:15:50
the title of 107 is wrong its "killing in the name" there is actually no "of" in the title, its just a common mistake because of the lyrics.
AJ Flame  - Ummmmmm....   |71.41.54.xxx |2008-08-12 15:03:12
......I think you messed up somehow.......

I believe James "Laid" is supposed to be #1.

dork knight  - 90s rules   |60.48.190.xxx |2008-08-13 11:33:05
its a good list.but not excellent..i agree with some of the comments here.but what to do?,it says top 200.i hope the therockczar can extend the list to top 300 or 400..not only it can complete the list but it also can be used for future revision..thanks.

Jimbo  - my thoughts   |69.242.123.xxx |2008-08-25 15:58:42
because the night - 10,000 maniacs
hook - blues traveler
all for you - sister hazel
epic - faith no more
my own worst enemy - lit
only wanna be with you - hootie and the blowfish
smooth criminal - alien ant farm
send me on my way - rusted root
torn - Natalie Imbruglia
sunny came home - Shawn Colvin
lullaby - Shawn Mullins

just some that i didn't see that could fit pretty well on the list
The Rock Czar  - Some of these were close   |68.48.35.xxx |2008-08-27 01:36:21
Hook, All for you, and Sonny Came Home all almost made it. Torn is very high on my 90s pop songs list. I prefer MJ's Smooth Criminal. Because the Night is solid, but not quite top 200 material. Never been big on Faith No More or Hootie. Hate Shawn Mullins, and am not a big fan of Rusted Root.

kenny   |209.121.27.xxx |2008-09-02 18:48:27

yellow ledbetter is the best
brandon   |162.40.164.xxx |2009-06-06 09:51:10
Black is far better a Pearl Jam song.
dalton   |76.91.72.xxx |2008-10-21 16:16:33
How can you leave off the huge crossover hit, "Stay" by Shakespears Sister. Alternative pop at it's best.
Nikki   |64.13.109.xxx |2008-10-22 11:09:32
OLEANDER....I have not even thought about them in years. They had some good songs. Also the primitive radio gods man I love that shit
Jimmy  - Throwing it out there....   |99.242.33.xxx |2008-11-06 02:44:03
Its disappoints me that I Mother Earth never gets mentioned. Perhaps they didn't make it big enough in the US, perhaps its cause Edwin left the band too early, but every fan of alternative music in Canada puts them on their favs list. Check them out, and start loving them if you dont already
The Rock Czar  - Eh   |68.48.35.xxx |2008-11-18 21:34:57
I know them. They are ok. They have a bit of a manufactured sound I never took too.
Fast Eddie  - Why did you omit......   |24.153.219.xxx |2008-11-07 21:41:48
I understand this is a faves list, but man, look what you left out.....
1)Pearl Jam-Yellow Ledbetter
2)Meat Puppets-Backwater
3)Refreshments-Bandidos
4)Sponge-Plowed
5)Prong-Snap Your Fingers....
6)Goo Goo Dolls-Name
7)Mad Season-River of Deceit.
I was an alt rock D.J. in the 90'S; otherwise great list Czar!

Eric   |207.6.115.xxx |2008-11-13 23:37:56
oh and cake should have been a way bigger band! awesome huge cake fan
Cortney   |68.41.167.xxx |2008-11-14 20:04:18
Why do some of you have to insult other genres of music? That is so disrespectful. All genres have the bullshit and the substance. You are obviously not really listening to much hip hop...its your fault if you only listen to the shit on the radio....do you know who the roots are, the old black eyed peas before fergie's dumb ass...that kind of thing...do your research and be respectful. How would alternative look if someone only listened to the half pop-breed type shit? They'd hate it. Don't do that. Love the list though and loved all of these songs on it!!
James   |69.0.15.xxx |2008-11-28 17:29:18
yo man you need to move those Pearl jam songs up big time. How can you have Jeremy after a song like closing time by semi sonic. They dont even compare. This list isnt very good to be honest. I agree with some of the songs but not the placement. Im a big alice in chains fan as well but i think your a little to bias on these lists with them. MORE PJ SON
Lou   |24.58.235.xxx |2008-12-17 01:46:28
I didn't take the time to read all these comments before hand, but Metallica not in the top 50 or even top 25 is just a sin.
690 ohio  - Lou you are WRONG!   |122.57.94.xxx |2008-12-18 15:34:59
metallica are hardly what you would call alt. rock and they just weren't the best band around in the 90s. Also, if you think deserve a spot on this list they don't and they are so overrated, they don't even write their own songs. They copied "Enter Sandman" off an obscure band named "Devil's Sparrow Cage". If DSC were better known people would acknowledge it was just a cover version.
690 ohio  - ...oh and...   |122.57.94.xxx |2008-12-18 15:37:33
Just to add a little more, I know it is not 90s but "One" which is arguably thier 2nd most famous was written and first performed by Austrian singer "Baggy Lee" in 1981 and released as a single in 1982. But because the media was so messed up back then and still is today Metallica is given all the credit, the overrated bastards.
Lou   |69.207.152.xxx |2008-12-21 03:31:52
Those guys ran shit, Rock Czar said if they're on Rock stations then they should be on this list and beacuse they're on the list they should be higher. "Nothing Else Matters" was an original song and was kickass. "The Unforgiven" is an epic song. I would say they're hard rock but these songs are pretty much what this list is comprised of, not to mention Hammett is one of the greatest guitarist out there.
Jonathan  - Good List.   |65.50.16.xxx |2008-12-22 16:23:58
I'd have put "In Circles" and "Seven" by Sunny Day Real Estate on the list. Oh, and "Circles" by Soul Coughing. "Stars" by Hum would be on my top 200 list (sadly this song is now used in Cadillac commercials).
swayo   |67.246.98.xxx |2008-12-24 10:22:22
what about bands like shades apart and wheatus and stuff like that?
BenJ  - reply to swayo   |125.239.150.xxx |2008-12-24 13:16:23
I don't know why the rock czar left those ones out but I would say since wheatus had a one hit wonder in 2000 (meaning not 1990s)
and shades apart is so insignificant to the extent that I've never heard of them, I would say that TRC thought them ineligible for the list. But of course, I'm NOT the rock czar so I would not know but that's what I think...

Pretty cool list man, i'm not a huge AIC fan but I realize that everyone has there own tastes, and I'll probably get chased out of this board with pitchforks for saying this but i think that "Higher" definitely deserves a spot on the list, don't quoute me on this but i think it set a record for longest time as #1 on the billboards
Pat No More   |94.214.21.xxx |2009-01-15 17:49:22

Ignore the naysayers. This list is completely awesome. I bet you most people posting here haven't fully lived through the 90's era so their opinion is void.
Kix  - Not much mention of Temple of the Dog on this site   |74.196.224.xxx |2009-01-19 22:54:24
the only place I saw any mention of Temple of the Dog was in Mike's top guitarists list under McCready. That's a major overlook for there to be so many 90's rock fans on this site. "Reach Down" and "Say Hello to Heaven" should have both been in this list. For neither one to be listed in the top 1000 songs either is even worse. How can a Soundgarden/Pearl Jam super group not be mentioned but once? Chris Cornell's vocals along with Mike McCready's guitar work made for some great songs. I demand an update immediately.
Nicholas  - c'mon   |98.226.175.xxx |2009-01-21 02:44:23
Man where do you get the stones not to include any Pixies while including somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 Alice in Chains songs and 10 Soundgarden songs. Have some damned discretion. Also, you forgot I'm Not an Addict by K's Choice, Pets by Porno for Pyros, Under the Bridge and Lightning Crashes (the last two I guess you forgot to include because they were hits). I'm forgetting plenty, but that's just 'cause I can't get over how irked I was that Closer and Pepper were nestled in the asshole of your list while you saw fit to put four fucking Alice in Chains songs in your top 20.
Nicholas   |98.226.175.xxx |2009-01-21 02:47:59
I'm going to stage a Rokshevik revolution and overthrow your monarchy, dude. You had a shit-balls load of songs off of Nevermind but you don't have Where Did You Sleep Last Night.
Nicholas   |98.226.175.xxx |2009-01-21 02:52:16
Oh and you forgot Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

The AIC version.

Dont agree with #1 at all think Counting Crows could of been higher there defiantly one of the unique sounding alternative bands and you have all those stp songs but no combersome
Anonymous   |64.126.190.xxx |2009-02-11 16:29:33
This list is aweful.... how many alice in chains songs are you going to add to the freaking alternative rock playlist....
Leanne   |151.203.115.xxx |2009-02-12 12:34:17
I Love The 90's!!!!!!
Marillion   |115.127.16.xxx |2009-02-20 15:58:21
Pearl Jam is not only the best alternative band ever but also the best band of the 90s. Even if you choose 2 songs from each of their first 5 albums, you wont be able to decide the order. The list should definitely contain at least 10 songs of Pearl Jam and should be put within the top 50.

REM's everybody hurts, Hootie's Let her cry and at least 2 songs of Dave Mathews Band and Spin Doctors should be considered. Also, the father of Alt. music, Neil Young's best 2/3 should be in the list.

Songs produced by bands of the later 90s were more commercial, less creative and poppish. Nothing compares the compositions created by the pioneers of Alternative Rock in the early 90s. The list must be revised.
spencer   |71.58.186.xxx |2009-02-22 04:11:20
good list... but missing stuff from pusa (the presidents of the united states of america) and of coures bush's "letting the cables sleep" other than that like a siad not a bad list
spencer   |71.58.186.xxx |2009-02-22 04:14:41

does anybody knows the title of this song " then you really don't know what it's like ( what it's like ) the you really don't know what it's like....." and by whom? Alternative rock song between 1998 & 2001. Thanks

The song you are referring to is:

Everlast- "What it's like"

A very good song if I do say so myself.

Thanks and keep on coming back to TRC.

Foo Fighters?

Decent list, but I disagree with your #1. I do like how the often overlooked "Bound To The Floor" is high on your list. I love AIC and Smashing Pumpkins, but you have a bit too many of their songs on there. With Disarm at 200? And no "Today - Smashing Pumpkins"? Rage is too low, Presidents of The United States of America is missing. Also, I think you left off Temple of The Dog.

Note to posters: I would normally agree with "Epic - Faith No More" but it's an 80's song.

Good list, though. Not easy to make a list of the Top 90's alt. rock songs. You could easily have a top 400 or 500. Good job.
The Rock Czar   |98.231.221.xxx |2009-03-07 12:00:54
I wish you guys would use the CTRL+F function on your computer and search for the song that you claim I don't have on this list! Look carefully, "Today" is #82 on here.

As for Temple of the Dog, I don't like them and POTUSA suck too.

Guy looking for song   |219.89.71.xxx |2009-03-10 02:12:05
I think it came out in the 90s. It was a pop rock song:

"...we used to be friends, a long time ago..."

Any ideas?
The Rock Czar   |98.231.221.xxx |2009-03-10 16:59:53
It's actually called "We Used to be Friends" and its by the Dandy Warhols. Definitely belongs more in the Indie/Pop spectrum, however it's an awesome song.

You left so many great female fronted bands off this list, which is tragic since the 90's saw the birth of riot grrl, lilith fair and the emergence of many female rockers. I can forgive leaving off a lot of great 80'snew wave bands that were still going strong in the 90's, like Siouxie and Banshees, but...

Great, I'm a DJ and you've basically just posted my old alternative set list on line so anyone can do what I do, thanks.

Truth be told you've missed a few tricks here. only one NIN song for a start and what about Cold, White Zombie & early Korn, and there's more than one one hit wonder you've missed.

Wait a second, there's no Faith No More here, what where you thinking!!!! No list of the top alt songs from the 90's is complete without Epic. Actually there loads more i could mention but I think you get my point.

fugazi? deftones? my bloody valentine? dinosaur jr? neutral milk hotel? pavement? the flaming lips? the dismemberment plan? belle and sebastian? liz phair? modest mouse? yo la tengo? bjork? wilco? Off the top of my head and I don't think any of these bands are represented. and these are just the bands i didn't see anyone else mention.

I like a lot of the songs on here, but really this list comes from a very narrow definition of alternative rock. It seems that it is mostly alt rock songs that MTV liked.
