Album Review: “Congratulations Forever” by The Very Most

It’s rare that I find an album that I can sit and listen to; needless to say I shuffle a lot.  However, this new band from Boise, Idaho managed to do the trick.   The Very Most is an indie pop band that has a relatively similar sound to of Montreal and gets their influences from the Beach Boys, Built to Spill, Smiths, and Belle and Sebastian yet brings their own sound in with it.  They toss it all together to achieve an original sound with warm, comfortable tones that make it just right for everyday listening.  The band was founded in 2002 by Jeremy Jensen and he shares the stage with Zach Von House and Allen Ellis but the album is really a compilation of multiple efforts and the diversity really serves it well.  

            The title track, “Congratulations Forever”, is the star of the album.  Extremely catchy, it grows on you to become a favorite.  Be sure you hang on at the end of the last track to hear the Bonus ‘Tracke’; it pays a bit of homage to “Congratulations Forever” but makes a great use of the piano. Their other upbeat songs, which are the majority, never fail to impress; even with the interesting nouveau instrumentals that sometimes complicate the background.   The album also features an edited cover of the Built to Spill song, “When Not Being Stupid is Not Enough” and they give it their own sort of flavor.

            All in all, no complaints: great sound, easy listening, always interesting.  It’s a must hear and works well on repeat in the car!  While this album will mostly cater to the young adult and over crowd, it is a great listen for everybody.  Take the chance to snag their album which is available on their website: www.theverymost.com, at their shows, and is also available for purchase on iTunes.
